SOPI Beginner Workshop

Assessing Oral Proficiency, Part I:  SOPI Beginner Workshop

(maximum 30 participants)

K-12 teachers, would you like to assess the speaking proficiency of your

students?

High school teachers, are you interested in a district-wide assessment that meets

the PEP criteria for a standards-based assessment?

This one-day orientation workshop will present a SOPI-type assessment that

was developed by the Pittsburgh Public Schools with funding from the US

Department of Education. Participants will receive a thorough understanding of

the lower levels (to Intermediate Low) of the ACTFL Oral Proficiency Scale and

an explanation of the SOPI-type test structure. Participants will then be grouped

by language to listen to and practice rating student speech samples in French,

German, and Spanish. Participants will leave with a packet of materials to

implement a sample test in their schools.

Presenters:

Dr. Bonnie Adair-Hauck, University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Eileen Glisan, Indiana University of Pennsylvania

Dr. Thekla Fall, Consultant and Former World Language Coordinator,  Pittsburgh

Public Schools

Questions on the workshop can be directed to Bonnie Adair-Hauck at adairhauck@mindspring.com.
