Teaching English as a Second Language
Certificate Program

at Juniata College and the University of Otavalo, Ecuador

Intercultural Awareness….Practice Teaching…….Language Learning

Juniata College offers a twelve credit program of classroom instruction, teaching practice and cultural learning to prepare teachers to meet the competencies of the ESL Program Specialist Certificate. An international field-based module, conducted at a partner university in Ecuador in summer 2006, will allow teachers to apply ESL teaching strategies, experience a multicultural and second language environment, and analyze the challenges that linguistically diverse ESL students may face in U.S. classrooms. Principles of sheltered English instruction are offered using the S.I.O.P. model.

The program will begin with on-line instruction and two weekend courses in early spring 2006 at Juniata College in Huntingdon, PA. In mid-June, teachers travel to Ecuador for the three week intensive instructional module at the University of Otavalo, located in a small community in the Andean highlands. Complementing classroom instruction, the three week field experience in Ecuador included teaching practice with Ecuadorian elementary and high school students, daily life with host families, and Spanish (or Quichua) language classes. The program will culminate in August with two additional weekend sessions at Juniata completing the 12 credit program. The international field-based experience may be of interest to language instructors and may be completed independently for cultural experience or for classroom experience with sheltered instruction.

Competency in a second language is not required to enter the program as all instruction for teachers is offered in English. For more information visit http://www.juniata.edu/iep/teslor contact:
